Find Help, Find Hope!

NAMI CHARLOTTE and the College Community

NAMI-Charlotte is on the move in the greater Charlotte area. In the past two years, members of the Board of Directors have responded to three requests from Dr. Laura Sockol, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Davidson College, to speak to her Abnormal Psychology classes. Both peers and board members have shared their personal stories, wisdom, and the organizational history of NAMI with Dr. Sockol’s students at an end-of-semester session. The students have responded with excellent questions and an eagerness to learn more about mental health resources in the community.

One of the students who attended our presentation was Jack Robinson, a Sophomore and President of Changing Minds, the mental health club on campus. On March 14, he and his club sponsored a Mental Health Fair on campus that included representatives from such groups as the campus counseling center, the head health adviser, queers and allies, AKA, and the chaplain’s office. Because we had left an impression while presenting to his class, he reached out to us as an important and necessary exhibitor.

Carolyn Robinson and Linda Phillips were happy to represent NAMI and were pleased with the steady stream of students who stopped at the table to ask questions and pick up some of the flyers and information we offered. A particularly popular item was the bookmark that lists the names of numerous notable persons through the years who have carved out successful lives in spite of a mental illness.

NAMI-Charlotte is particularly eager to dialogue with college students who statistically have the highest rate of diagnosed mental illness in the general population, and whose death by suicide is the third leading cause. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Davidson, and reaching out to the other campuses around the Charlotte area.

Jack Robinson, President of Changing Minds. Kristina Reihl, Licensed Psychologist and speaker at the Mental Health Fair.
